August

Well, unfortunately, August has not been a good month for us. On August 10, Chase had his total eye exeneration, in which they removed his eyeball and everything behind it. Chase stayed one night in the hospital, and went home the next day...doing great. Thursday, Chase's throat began to hurt, but we figured it was just from all the drainage from surgery. Chase's throat soon began to SEVERELY hurt him. Thursday night, he began throwing up non-stop...on to Friday...Saturday...Sunday. His mom called the on-call doctor at UAB on Friday and asked the doctor what we needed to do. The doctor told us that this was very normal after the major surgery Chase had just had. But, Monday morning rolled around and Chase was not any better. His throat was hurting him so bad...he says the worst pain he has ever been in. Mrs. Sharion and Chase immediately drove to UAB to see Dr. Carroll (Chase's ENT that had performed the surgery). Dr. Carroll looked in Chase's throat and said he has a bad yeast infection, and admitted him into the hospital to start IV antifungals. Tuesday, Chase started feeling much better. Chase's oncologist came over to the hospital, and Chase had a nice long talk with him. I went home to my house in Bham that night, thinking Chase was doing much better, and I'd be back the next morning. Mrs. Sharion called me Wednesday morning and said that Chase had a really bad night and was doing much worse. I hurried to the hospital to see Chase. He had a rash all over his body, a fever, could not talk (because his throat hurt him so bad), TONS of mucus drainage, low sodium, etc. The doctor ordered for Chase to have a lung x-ray, and a CT scan of his head and neck. Everything came back with wonderful results. The CT scan did show a lot of sinus drainage, which is expected from his intense surgery. Thursday....still not better. I asked the doctor if they would please do a throat culture to confirm that it is a yeast infection in his throat, and not something else. Also, the doctors started him on 2 new antibiotics that day. One antibiotic for a concerning blood infection and the other antibiotic for his sinus infection. Saturday we found out that the throat and blood cultures are negative. The neurologist also came by to check Chase out. She said Chase showed no signs of meningitis.

...The cultures grew absolutely nothing. This is a really good sign, but also bad because we don't know what his problem is.

So anyways, here it is Sunday night, and tomorrow will make a week from when Chase was admitted into the hospital. He has not improved since he was admitted. Well, the sinus drainage has lessened A LOT, but his main concern, his throat, has not improved. The back of Chase's throat is still very red, and white. Dr. Carroll said that Chase's throat is the worst throat he has ever seen. Right now, the doctors are thinking all of this is due to his heavy sinus drainage and the throwing up (since no yeast grew). Chase has now not eaten in 10 days. The doctors discussed putting in a feeding tube today for Chase, but decided to try to make him drink Ensure instead. Thankfully, Chase forced the Ensure down his throat. Chase is on very strong pain medicines, so he has been saying some crazy things! I'm very ready to get my normal Chase back. He is so sick and so weak. I can't stand to see him like this.

So now we wait...we wait to see if Chase improves any, we wait to hear the FINAL results of the throat culture, we wait to see if the white in the back of his throat begins to disappear, we wait for the doctors to decide what they shall do next. PLEASE pray for Chase. He has never ever felt or looked this bad...even throughout all his chemo. Please pray for a complete healing; pray that we soon have answers as to what is causing his pain; please pray that Chase soon starts to feel like himself again. Thank you all!!
